NCR To Resell SMART's eCustomer Enterprise Software As Part of a Complete Electronic Commerce Solution

- Move follows NCR's successful scalability testing of SMART's DNA software on Microsoft's eCommerce platform-

Austin, TX and Dayton, Ohio, June 9, 1998 - NCR Corporation today announced that it will become a reseller of SMART Technologies' eCustomer Enterprise Relationship Management software. Under terms of the agreement, NCR will initially offer SMART's eCustomer software as part of its communications industry electronic commerce solutions.

Plans also call for NCR to provide the SMART eCustomer solution tailored to other industries, as part of its High Availability solutions portfolio. The High Availability solutions portfolio includes Electronic Commerce and CTI/ Call Center solutions, as well as high availability programs built on top of Microsoft Exchange and multi-user NT environments.

The SMART eCustomer system has two primary components: SMART Touchpoints™, which are customer-driven applications for customer channel enablement, dynamic customer interaction, and customer-driven service and support; and SMART DNA™, a scalable, reliable, extensible and supportable infrastructure and architecture for processing customer interactions over the Web.

NCR will resell SMART's eCustomer software to telecommunications companies to provide kiosk solutions for self-service in the retail environment, and E-Commerce solutions with an on-line catalog.

"By adding the SMART DNA technology to our portfolio, we are able to offer a complete E-Commerce solution that allows our customers to quickly move from transaction to interaction - the third generation of E-Commerce", said Mark Hurd, vice president of Marketing for NCR's Computer Systems Group. "For our customers, this means moving from simple selling to higher-value buying, which is key to how they grow and retain a diverse consumer base."

The companies are also investigating the integration of SMART's Enterprise software with other NCR customer interaction and data warehousing solutions. As part of those solutions, both NCR and SMART Technologies have partnered with Microsoft to deliver enterprise-ready Electronic Commerce offerings that are driven by the needs of the customer. For NCR, this latest initiative is part of a series of E-Commerce solutions involving Microsoft products that underscores the commitment that NCR and Microsoft made on March 10 to bring such solutions to market.

Commented Jean Cho, Group Product Manager for eCommerce Marketing at Microsoft Corp., "We are pleased to provide the eCommerce platform that supports the efforts of two industry leaders in bringing enterprise-capable solutions to the fast growing market for electronic commerce. Based on Windows NT Server and Site Server 3.0 Commerce Edition, NCR and SMART Technologies will offer large and medium-sized businesses the unique ability to build cost-effective E-Commerce sites that provide a reduced time-to-market and lower development costs while more quickly satisfying the needs of consumers."

NCR also announced the results of scalability tests that it conducted at the company's Customer Benchmark Center in Columbia, SC, to determine how SMART's eCustomer software would scale on NCR server platforms to meet the capacity requirements of highly trafficked Web sites. Testing was done on three NCR WorldMark 4380 8-way servers - running NT - that maximize the solution's scalability.

During the tests, the SMART software rendered more than 1.1 million dynamic pages per hour with less than 5-second or better response time. Demonstrating SMART's efficient load balancing capabilities, the average response time across all servers remained low (< 1 second) until near maximum capacity for each server was reached. The test results clearly demonstrate that high-volume customer-focused Internet commerce solutions are available today in cost-effective configurations.

"NCR realized that its communications industry customers are under tremendous competitive pressure to leverage the Internet to grow and retain their consumer base while streamlining costs," said Buddy Wilson, Vice President of Alternate Channels at SMART Technologies. "Combining NCR's E-Commerce solutions with SMART DNA gives businesses the enterprise scalability required to meet customer demands."
