SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 7, 1998--
"NetShow Theater Server to provide broadcast quality video over
dedicated networks via Stellar One Video Browser Terminal
(Set-Top Box)"
Stellar One Corporation, a leading provider in digital set-top video
browser terminals, today announced that it will incorporate support for
Microsoft NetShow Theater Server into its family of Netris(tm) 3000 Video
Browser(tm) Terminals.
NetShow Theater Server support is scheduled for sometime in the fourth
quarter, 1998.
Microsoft's NetShow Theater Server will provide broadcast-quality video
over dedicated LANs or ATM networks via a Stellar One Netris 3000. NetShow
Theater Server is built on a highly scalable, fault-tolerant architecture that
provides full-screen, full-motion video on demand. Users play content with the
new Microsoft Windows Media Player. On the client side, Stellar One's Netris
3000 is a set-top video browser terminal, or network access device (intelligent
network terminal) that acts as an interface between the Microsoft NetShow
Theater Server and the television. The Netris 3000 connects to a very high-
speed (broadband) 2-way network, which can deliver high quality video
conferencing, telemedicine, audio, distance learning, and guest services. Like
Stellar One's Netris 3000, NetShow Theater Server is ideally suited to
customers such as hotels, airlines, and organizations that want to build video
kiosks or LAN-based video training centers.
"The Netris 3000 allows enterprise network owners to rapidly deploy new
interactive and broadband applications. The plug-and-play nature of these
products enables network owners to migrate to new connection technologies,
including, Ethernet, ATM Forum 25.6, and xDSL with little impact to the user,"
said Steve Voit, executive vice president of marketing for Stellar One
Corporation.
"The Netris 3000 provides a great set-top box solution for the Microsoft
NetShow Theater Server," said Gary Schare, lead product manager for Windows NT
Server NetShow Services, Microsoft Corp. "It enables our customers to view high-
quality video as it is streamed from our server. We are very pleased to be
working with Stellar One to deliver a new, broadband platform for interactive
multimedia services."
Netris 3000 Video Browser Terminal
Today's cable TV set-top boxes can be thought of as a tuner for programming
that is selected from a "river of data" flowing down the cable TV wire, much
like a TV tuner selects programming broadcast over the air. The Netris 3000 set-
top appliance however, is a network access device (intelligent network
terminal) that acts as an interface between the server and television, or the
PC. It has a CPU and the necessary software built in. The Netris 3000 connects
to a very high-speed (broadband) 2-way network, which means that a user
"requests" and receives information on demand, such as a movie or web page.
Among all the other service related functionality (e.g., Internet services
access and usability) the Netris 3000 provides similar functionality as the VCR
in that you can play, rewind/fast forward, stop, and return to your movie -- on
your schedule -- over the network without having to go to the store.
Acting as a "Gateway" to your home or office, The Netris 3000 family of
products enables interactive services for both the consumer and commercial
enterprises. For the consumer, applications including video-on-demand, video
archival/retrieval (time-shifted video), and home shopping will tap new forms
of entertainment and deliver cinematically appealing video. For commercial
applications, enterprises will enjoy, high quality video conferencing,
telemedicine, online learning and distance training, guest services, and PC
connectivity for the small-office. Both consumers and enterprises alike will
benefit from new and improved applications such as high-speed Internet access,
video phone, security/surveillance systems, and video mail.
For content developers, the Netris family of Video Browser Terminals
reduces initial investment of application development time, and ongoing
operations through modular network interfaces, modular software, and industry
standards adherence, making it the most cost-effective set-top appliance on the
market today. The Netris 3000 allows enterprise network owners to rapidly
deploy new interactive and broadband applications. The plug-and-play nature of
these products enables network owners to migrate to new connection
technologies, including, Ethernet, ATM Forum 25.6, and xDSL with little impact
to the user.
