Carroll Touch Announces Industry's Largest Touchscreen

ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 1998--Carroll Touch, the world leader in build-to-order solutions for the touch interface market, today announced a new clip-on Smart Frame that enables customers to add touchscreen capability to 42-inch gas plasma displays. The new Smart Frame clip-on is the largest touch screen available for a flat panel display.

The product was designed to fit the popular Fujitsu 42-inch gas plasma display, but can easily be modified for any 42-inch monitor, and a variety of smaller sizes are already available through Carroll Touch.

``The 42-inch Smart Frame offers our customers new options for touch interface applications because it is the first such solution to fit a 42-inch display,'' said Stacey Woltenberg, infrared product manager. ``Carroll Touch is committed to bringing a wide range of touch technologies and sizes to the monitor market to meet our customers' needs.''

Carroll Touch developed the 42-inch frame at the request of customers who want increasingly large touch-interface devices for applications ranging from executive board rooms, trade show exhibitions, executive training centers, and public information kiosks. Increasingly, designers of industrial control systems are also considering larger touch interfaces for a variety of applications. For example, the trend toward walk-by verification by supervisors of highly automated operations is made much easier with larger touch control and feedback panels which enable them to walk by displays and quickly spot negative conditions.

The new touch frame features scanning infrared technology, the most rugged and reliable technology available, and is designed for easy, non-invasive integration. The smart frame contains a built-in serial controller that connects to a RS-232 port, and every unit ships with software and drivers for Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems.

Scanning infrared technology ensures a long life for touch products, making them an ideal choice for public and industrial applications. Carroll Touch scanning infrared products are 100 percent transmissive, operate well even in direct sunlight, can withstand vandalism, are not subject to drift, and offer sustained use without routine maintenance.

Carroll Touch pioneered scanning infrared touch technology in the 1970s and is continually enhancing the technology to keep up with customer requirements, delivering solutions for computer monitors, terminals and flat panel displays. Recently, Carroll Touch added a four-wire resistive touch technology to its offerings. Carroll Touch was the first in its industry to offer a comprehensive five-year warranty on its touch products and was the first major touch vendor to achieve ISO 9001 quality certification.

The 42-inch Smart Frames are available immediately through Carroll Touch. Prices range from $1,900 for a single-unit purchase to $1,000 each in volume.
