Circuit City Deploys Citrix MetaFrame Software for Large-Scale In-Store Kiosk InitiativeLeading Electronics Retailer Installs MetaFrame in Over 500 Stores Nationwide
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1998--Citrix
Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CTXS - news) today announced that Circuit City Stores,
Inc., the nation's largest retailer of brand-name consumer electronics
and appliances, has deployed MetaFrame(tm) server-based software to
support the company's ``Computer Build-to-Order Stations'' kiosk
initiative. Circuit City has deployed MetaFrame servers to more than
500 stores nationwide, a significant installation that illustrates
widespread corporate acceptance of Citrix's server-based computing
architecture. MetaFrame reduces the total cost of the solution by
centralizing software installations, updates and maintenance on the
kiosk servers, and providing support for heterogeneous computing
environments.
Circuit City is deploying MetaFrame server software to enable
implementation of its Computer Stations, which are being introduced at
its retail stores nationwide. The sales-assisted touch-screen kiosks
offer customers a fast, simple way to build personal computers from
name-brand computer manufacturers, giving them literally millions of
configuration options at competitive prices.
``Citrix's server-based computing architecture has enabled Circuit
City to move to the next level of customer service and establish a
very competitive position in the retail electronics market,'' said
Dennis Bowman, senior vice president and chief information officer for
Circuit City. ``By solving the support and cost issues, MetaFrame
allowed us to successfully launch this crucial business initiative.''
``Circuit City's kiosk installation, which is one of the largest
MetaFrame deployments to date, demonstrates the flexibility of our
server-based computing architecture in supporting new types of
information appliances,'' said Steve Adams, vice president of marketing
for Citrix. ``MetaFrame will allow Circuit City to improve its
competitive position by offering customers a new way to order
computers. At the same time, MetaFrame is keeping down the cost of
this project with server-based management of its non-POS enterprise
applications and support for existing hardware.''
To maximize return on investment for the new MetaFrame servers,
Circuit City plans to migrate additional applications to them, making
each kiosk server the major processor in each store for non-POS
applications. Because Circuit City employees use a variety of clients,
including older Windows-based PCs and UNIX workstations, MetaFrame's
support for heterogeneous clients is essential to this migration.
Bowman also expects to realize cost savings from MetaFrame's
centralized management and rapid application deployment.
