GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 26, 1998--

Device targets markets with estimated sales of $5 billion in 2001

STMicroelectronics today announced the introduction of its newest superintegrated PC-on-a-chip, the STPC Industrial, which allows a complete system with full PC functionality to be built for less than $100.

Its broad range of applications include information kiosks, point-of-sale terminals, Internet-surfing boxes, thin client terminals, gaming consoles, security access systems and industrial PCs. The device provides a one-chip solution for a variety of systems that, until now, required up to 6 chips.

"The STPC Industrial allows a complete system to be built for less than $100, yet guarantees full PC functionality. By breaking existing system cost barriers in this way, ST is enabling the creation of entirely new high volume markets," said Piero Martinotti, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of ST's New Ventures Group. "The key benefit of ST's system-on-chip technology is not so much the sheer scale of integration but the assurance that the whole system is guaranteed to work immediately. This translates into unique business opportunities for our customers and improvements in their time to profit."

The STPC Industrial has a target volume price of below $40. The STPC portfolio of devices targets the ultra-low-cost PC and 32-bit embedded markets, which are projected to reach $1.2 billion and $3.8 billion, respectively, in annual sales by 2001. According to Dataquest, the embedded CPU market will pass the 200 million unit mark in 1998 - double the volume of the PC computing market. Unlike the PC computing market, where average chip prices are expected to continue to fall, the 32-bit embedded market is a more stable market, which will further benefit from cost-optimized technologies and the added-value of system-level integration. For example, more than 60% of the STPC's die size (its electronic functions) are comprised of PC-on-a-chip system level integration. The remainder encompasses the sheer CPU core.

The STPC Industrial increases reliability and eliminates compatibility problems often encountered with standard PC solutions. In addition, the cost benefits of STMicroelectronics's superintegration technology open up new applications that would not be economically feasible with standard PCs. This combination of attributes makes the STPC Industrial particularly suitable for cost-sensitive industrial and commercial applications.

The STPC Industrial was designed using state-of-the-art reusable modular design techniques, allowing custom variants to be rapidly created. The individual modules all have full test vector sets, allowing the complete chip to be tested using a multiplexing boundary scan approach which can extend to full IEEE 1491.1 compliance if required. Similarly, the ASIC-like design flow uses the most modern techniques to ensure fast and reliable product development. This means that, while the standard product has been engineered to offer the best mix of performance and functionality across the industrial embedded PC market, it can be readily tailored to offer even greater cost benefits to specific high volume customers.
