Micros Introduces A New High Performance Touchscreen PC, The Ultra PC Workstation (Business Wire; 12/02/98)BELTSVILLE, MD. (Dec. 2) BUSINESS WIRE -Dec. 2, 1998--MICROS Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: MCRS), a leading provider of information management solutions for the hospitality industry, announced Wednesday the release of its latest network- ready, touchscreen point-of-sale (POS) platform, the Ultra PC Workstation, for global distribution. The Ultra PC Workstation is designed to meet the business needs of foodservice operators by providing a high-performance, flexible PC platform for POS operations. It supports MICROS's full range of PC-based POS software solutions as well as other third-party POS software applications. As an integrated unit that includes both the touchscreen monitor and processor, the Ultra provides a compact, multi-function workstation that occupies minimal space in hospitality venues such as table service or quick service restaurants, hotels, casinos, theme parks and stadiums. The system leverages an open systems architecture that allows customers to run a variety of operating systems including DOS, Microsoft(R) Windows(R) for Workgroups, Windows(R) 95 and Windows NT(R) Workstation. "The Ultra PC Workstation goes to the heart of what foodservice operators want in a POS terminal," says Bernard Jammet, executive vice president of product development at MICROS. "It's a cost-effective, high-performance touchscreen PC designed for the harsh restaurant environment and capable of expanding to support future increased speed and memory applications," he continued. This new POS workstation offers the largest touchscreen work area with a 12.1" display and uses the latest PC technology including dual Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports allowing simultaneous running of up to 254 peripherals or add-on devices. The dual USB ports simplify plug and play connectivity and reduce maintenance costs. The Ultra's standard Intel 166 MHz processor can be upgraded to an Intel 233 MHz MMX processor for even higher performance and additional multimedia (audio and video) applications. With 512K standard cache and support for up to 128MB of RAM, the Ultra PC Workstation can act as a workstation or a server. In addition, its integrated diskless boot capabilities under DOS and Windows(R) 95 allow the Ultra to operate as a thin client with MICROS software applications. The optional PCI/ISA Bus Riser card allows users to plug half slot PCI and ISA cards inside the unit, giving them the ability to add internal modems, serial port expander cards, or whatever internal card devices they choose. With this flexibility, the Ultra offers a range of performance and configuration options for the dynamic foodservice environment.
