INTERSOLV DataDirect Puts Power Behind the Scottish Tourist Industry

09:16 a.m. Dec 17, 1998 Eastern

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Dec. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- INTERSOLV, Inc., a company in the Micro Focus Group ("Micro Focus") (Nasdaq: MIFGY; London Stock Exchange: MICF), recently announced in the United Kingdom that it is supplying the ODBC technology behind Ossian, a Scottish Tourist Board initiative, which is set to revolutionize the Scottish tourism industry.

Project Ossian is an electronic infrastructure and has been commissioned by the Scottish Tourist Board to provide a constantly updated database of information to support a new, dedicated Web site, which went live in November 1998. In addition, the database will provide the required data for a network of self-contained, touch-screen information kiosks to be placed in Tourist Information Centers around Scotland by March 1999.

The Scottish Tourist Board Web site and the public kiosks will enable customers to access the information they need to plan and book holidays or business trips, and generally experience the sights, sounds and products of Scotland.

Stephen Foster, Lead Senior Consultant, Ossian, said, "The Ossian initiative will help take the Scottish tourism industry into the new millennium and ensure competitive advantage and success in the global electronic market place. It complements the current Quality Assurance drive and together will provide visitors to Scotland with a level of service second to none. In our opinion, the INTERSOLV DataDirect(R) ODBC drivers are the fastest and most reliable available. By using DataDirect data connectivity solutions we ensure the continued openness and flexibility of the Ossian architecture."

From the Web site at www.holiday.scotland.net, tourists will be able to plan their visit from their own country and continue to access their itinerary when in Scotland. Potential visitors will be able to find practical information about traveling and accommodations, as well as places to see, maps, guides, and conference venues for businesses. A special online booking service for flights, hotels and theaters will be available, and tourists will be able to carry out transactions in their own currency, both from outside and within Scotland.

Keith Gupwell, INTERSOLV general manager for DataDirect UK, said, "The core of Ossian is a comprehensive, evolving database of information containing all tourism-related products, services and contacts. The use of ODBC for interaction with this database provides the most flexible and open solution available today."

Project Ossian is an electronic infrastructure for the entire Scottish tourism industry. The Scottish Tourist Board, Area Tourist Board and Tourist Information Centre network will be connected over one intranet. One of the key features of the Ossian technical architecture is its openness; the system has been designed around a multi-tier architecture, comprising many interchangeable components.
