ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- First Union National Bank installed the world's first freestanding exterior walk-up cash dispenser, the 1075ix from Diebold, Incorporated (NYSE: DBD), in Universal Studios(R) Islands of Adventure(SM), a new theme park at Universal Studios Escape(SM) in Orlando.

The 1075ix exterior walk-up cash dispenser was introduced in December 1998 at BAI's Retail Delivery conference. It is designed for outside deployment in a location where 24-hour operation and a small footprint is desirable, and medium-to-high transaction volumes are expected. The model includes four dispense cassettes, proven Diebold ix software and a full range of ix Series(TM) printers and displays that provide the options of coupon printing and dispensing, screen advertising, ticket/stamp/phone card dispensing and other revenue-generating features and applications.

"We found that Diebold's new 1075ix was the perfect solution to meet our location needs," said Wayne Rosenthal, vice president of sales for ATM Solutions, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of First Union. "To serve the most people, it was important to have the unit outside. That meant that we needed something tough enough to handle the weather conditions in Florida, specifically the heat, humidity and rain."

The 1075ix was installed on June 7, 1999 near the Enchanted Oak Tavern(SM), a restaurant within the park's Lost Continent island. The unit is adjacent to a main thoroughfare that includes phone banks, restrooms and other guest services.

"We're extremely excited about the potential for this new product and thrilled that its debut is at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure location, " said Robert J. Nemens, Diebold senior marketing manager. "With a small footprint, the weather-resistant features, and the economic advantages of not having to surround the unit with a building or enclosure, the 1075ix is another example of Diebold's innovative, self-service solutions."

Bob Ash, national ATM sales director for First Union, agrees. He envisions this ATM application will be well suited for locations such as stadiums, malls, airports, and entertainment and tourist attractions. According to Ash, the 1075ix greatly expands the range of solutions that First Union is able to provide to their customers. "In Florida for instance, we have so many outdoor attractions and outside malls," said Ash. "This model will be ideal in situations where weather is an issue or where the cost of constructing housing for an ATM would have been prohibitive. This product really opens up a whole new arena for us." In addition to the Universal Studios cash dispenser, First Union has purchased four additional 1075ix units and is in the process of installing those machines.
