Nikkei English News : OSAKA (Nikkei)--West Japan Railway Co. (9021) in October will start installing multifunction automatic teller machines at convenience stores run by a wholly owned subsidiary, which are located mainly in train station buildings.

The new ATMs will allow holders of Fuji Bank (8317) cards to withdraw funds and check account balances, and starting in November, users will also be able to pay utility bills as well as order and pay for goods over the Internet. Next spring, the machines will begin accepting cards from other banks and offering travel vouchers and movie and concert tickets. Debit card services will commence in fall 2000.

JR West says the new ATMs, jointly developed by Sogo Keibi Hosho Co. and Oki Electric Industry Co. (6703), will be the first of their kind to be found in convenience stores. The machines measure 88 x 60 x 159cm. The Osaka railroad company will install the first ATMs at four stores in Osaka, expanding to about 50 in Osaka and the surrounding regions by the spring.

The firm's subsidiary owns and operates 98 convenience stores in 13 prefectures.
