THE KIOSK SOFTWARE NEWS
News briefs from Kiosk Software, Inc., San Luis Obispo CA September, 1999

In This Issue:

1. KIOSK PROJECT PLANNING - The devil really IS in the details.

2. INTERNET ADVERTISING FOR KIOSKS - A new technology to generate additional revenue.

3. VAR SPOTLIGHT - Payday loans from your friendly local kiosk.

4. AMERICOMUSA - Kiosk Software's corporate parent has a big vision.

5. BURGERS, FRIES...AND KIOSKS? - McDonald's and Arby's put more "self" into self-service.

1. KIOSK PROJECT PLANNING - The devil really IS in the details.

Proper planning requires that the software application developer work with the client BEFORE any critical hardware decisions are made. One project we worked on illustrated this point. The client wanted a bar code reader on the kiosk and ordered them with the cabinets directly from the manufacturer - KSI never had a chance to test the mounted device in our labs on an actual enclosure.

The result? The factory installed the readers too deep inside the kiosk openings, and the sensors would not work properly. It took quite a while to figure out that it wasn't a software bug causing the problem, but that discovery cost the client valuable time against an advertised Grand Opening campaign they had arbitrarily set weeks in advance.

2. INTERNET ADVERTISING FOR KIOSKS - A new technology to generate additional revenue.

Is your kiosk project self-supporting? Some are, but many single-use kiosks need an additional revenue source to cover development and deployment costs.

Now web-based kiosks can take advantage of a hot new Internet technology developed by AdCast. Kiosk Software's proprietary operating system, Kiosk Operating Suite (K/OS), supports the AdCast non-scrollable e-billboard ads (as seen on our website at http://www.kioskco.com ) and currently running on many high-volume web sites nationally.

3. VAR SPOTLIGHT - Payday loans from your friendly local kiosk.

Advanced Media Communications (AMC), a Value Added Reseller for Kiosk Software, Inc. , is a Colorado company specializing in point-of-sale web-based kiosk applications. In collaboration with Mr. Money Financial Services, AMC has created an automated payday loan kiosk.

Consumers can apply for a loan 24 hours a day and receive an immediate approval, after which the kiosk prints encrypted receipts to be redeemed as either cash or products in participating stores.

4. AMERICOMUSA - Kiosk Software's corporate parent has a big vision.

Robert Cezar's longtime dream was to build a new kind of e-Commerce company, one that incorporated innovation and technology from a wide range of currently operating businesses into a framework of interlocking and complimentary divisions and subsidiaries. The CEO of AmeriComUSA, based in Arroyo Grande CA, may finally be within reach of his goal.

5. BURGERS, FRIES...AND KIOSKS? - McDonald's and Arby's put more "self" into self-service.

According to a recent News Journal Online article, several major fast-food franchises are taking another look at kiosks inside stores to speed customer service and increase sales.

"McDonald's is testing a machine that lets customers punch in their orders, pay with cash and wait at a table for their burgers and fries. Meanwhile, an Arby's franchisee in Golden, Colo., is trying out its own patented kiosks at five of its 62 restaurants.
