OMNIS Software -- New Information Kiosks to be Launched at LinuxWorld Expo

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 5, 1999--A new generation of interactive Information Kiosks will make their first appearance at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo on Aug. 9, 1999 in San Jose.

Developed by OMNIS Software and sponsored by the International Data Group (IDG), the Linux OS-based kiosks will supply visitors to LinuxWorld Expo this year with information about the exhibitors and their products, directions to specific booths and facilities, and allow attendees to vote for their favorite product as well as order product literature online.

Users of the Kiosks will be accessing the data through a standard web browser using the new OMNIS Web Client. The Web Client, a freely down-loadable plug-in component, allows the user to access any OMNIS Web Client enabled OMNIS Studio application over the Internet.

``The Kiosks are very powerful, flexible tools, providing visitors a wide and expanding range of services. The concept has already proven to be a very popular one with our exhibitors as it gives them more new ways of attracting customers to their booths,'' said Russ Walker, Sales director for IDG World Expo.

He continued, ``It is a testament to the OMNIS Studio product that such a robust, sophisticated solution could be produced so quickly. We are delighted with the results and expect to continue developing and evolving the kiosk concept for future shows.''

Gwyneth Gibbs, president of OMNIS Software, reflected similar sentiments: ``The future for the Linux OS is very exciting, however, there is a fear that some businesses will be deterred from using it because of the lack of business applications, particularly at the enterprise level. The development of the Information Kiosk on the Linux OS, in such a short time period, is a real demonstration of what can be achieved by using the tools of OMNIS Software.''

The Kiosk solution, running on Red Hat Linux, was developed using OMNIS Studio in just four weeks. This is possible because OMNIS is a powerful 4GL Rapid Application Development environment designed to produce flexible, scalable business solutions in a very short time frame.

It can be used to develop applications on Linux, Windows 95/98/NT or Mac and then deployed across all supported platforms without modification. OMNIS Studio supports direct connectivity to many leading databases including Oracle, IBM's Universal Database, Sybase and Informix and many others via ODBC.

OMNIS based solutions are used around the world in wide range of industries including aerospace, education, finance, government, telecommunications, manufacturing, healthcare and sports management.
