ST. PAUL, MN, February 9, 2000, Payphone Industry At Crossroads, Elcotel Leading Way Forward; Internet Business Plan; MontegoNet Rings In New Year; Linux/Java Strategy

The once high-flying payphone industry is at a crossroads. Future growth is flat at best. The more than 2 million payphones installed in the U.S. are growing at a single-digit rate, at best. There are several reasons. Most obvious is the incredible growth in the use of mobile phones in this country.

Many of the payphone companies are in a state of denial. They have not come to terms with the fact that their industry has changed forever. The good news is that a few of the leading payphone companies have awakened to the reality that if they are to survive and thrive, they must reinvent themselves. Two who have been at the forefront of this activity are Elcotel. and NetNearU.
