KIOSKS FROM LGC ASSOCIATES CHOSEN FOR

WAITROSE KIOSK PILOT

LGC Associates, the UKs leading kiosk design firm, has developed a dual-monitor touch screen-based kiosk used in UK-based Waitrose supermarkets and its party and event catering ordering system. Devised in conjunction with JKD, Waitroses multimedia supplier, LGC Associates was chosen as it proved to have extensive know-how and design experience in retail kiosk environments.

On trial at its Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK superstore, the kiosk, which allows two customers to use the system at once, is already proving a success. As more people become familiar with in-store kiosks appearing in many retail environments, inquisitive shoppers are often attracted to the presence of a new kiosk and have become comfortable using these systems.

Incorporating the results of its feasibility study, compliance with CE, European Health and Safety regulations and Disability use, LGC Associates produced the bespoke kiosk to meet the retailers colour scheme, physical specifications and product usability features. Account customers simply touch the screen and browse through the intuitive, menu-driven interface making selections as they would using the existing book-based system. Once the customer is finished making their selection, the kiosks integrated laser printer outputs a printed record of the order. On this three month trial kiosk, the data is retrieved via Waitroses standard ordering system, although it is expected to integrate this information more fully into a central, automated order processing facility when the kiosks roll out nation-wide.
