InfraRed Presence Detector

KIS has designed and can provide an infrared presence detector upon request. Cost is approximately $150.

Note that KIS has found the mat-style detector to be far superior in actual operation and that unit is what we recommend.

KIS KIOSK OBJECT PRESENCE DETECTOR

GENERAL INFORMATION -

The System consists of two control boards. The sensor unit, approx 1.5 in by 1.5 in by 0.5 in, contains the infrared transmitter and receiver. This unit is communicates to the second control Communication board, approx 2.0 in by 3.0 in by a custom DB9 serial cable. The Communication board contains the RS-232 communication chip and requires connection to a COM PORT of the PC via a standard DB9 serial cable, included. The Communication board requires power via a 24VDC power transformer, included, which jointly supplies power to the sensor unit. The sensor unit is adjustable, via a top mounted dial, to adjust the sensitivity of the sensor within a range of 1.0 to 36.0 inches.

COMMUNICATION INFO –

The RS-232 communication sends data in ASCII format to the PC via the specified COM Port. Upon detection of an object via the sensor unit the ASCII character "B", ASCII(65) is sent to the COM port. After the removal of the object from the monitored area of the senor unit, the ASCII character "B", ASCII(66) is sent. The ASCII character is sent on the ‘leading’ edge change as detected by the senor unit, thus the character "B" will be sent upon initial movement of an object within the adjusted range of the sensors beam. Additionally, the character "A" will be returned immediately after its removal from the sensor’s beam, and it will remain in the character "A” status until the sensor’s beam is once again obstructed.
To incorporate the sensor within the program, the COM Port must be monitored for transmission of the Character, "A", ASCII(65) or Character, "B", ASCII(66). The Character "A" or Character “B” is only sent ONCE per event..

COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL -

COM PORT SETTINGS –

9600, N, 8, 1

ASCII PROTOCOL –

Letter "B", ASCII(65) sent via COM Port upon detection of an object within the monitored area..
Letter "A", ASCII(66) sent via COM Port upon removal of that object from the monitored area after initial detection.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION –

NOTE 1 - The unit only sends the ASCII information upon the initial change in status of the sensor unit, i.e. ‘leading edge’ signal detection.

NOTE 2 - The unit does not receive data from computer, i.e. - no handshaking. It only transmits ASCII characters to the PC via the specified COM port.
