The Windows CE Toolkit for J++ 1.1, complete with a full set of Windows CE development documentation, loads of sample applications, and a Windows CE version of AppWizard is ready and waiting. The Philips Nino is the third brand of Palm-size PC powered by Windows CE to ship, following models from Everex and Casio. The Windows CE 2.1 Preview Release requires the Windows CE Embedded Toolkit for Visual C++ 5.0. New features include support for additional microprocessors, SoundBlaster, Host USB, Fast IR, IP Multicast, and more. Developers can call 1-888-296-6572 to order this release. Note that this release is NOT for Handheld PCs or Palm-size PCs. This offer only applies to orders shipped to addresses in the United States; parties interested in the release outside of the U.S. should contact their local Microsoft subsidiary. Similar to Active Channel(tm) views, Mobile Channels use "push" technology to send news and information to a desktop computer, where it can be synchronized to a portable browser on Palm-size PCs. The new design features a clean new appearance and user-friendly navigation. LINK TO: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsce/ WATCH WINDOWS CE ENTERPRISE DAY VIA NETSHOW ON THE WEB Windows CE Enterprise Day showcased how Windows CE-powered devices such Palm-size PCs and Handheld PCs extend the reach of corporate information systems. Attendees learned how PC Companion devices can synchronize data from sources such as Microsoft Office and Microsoft Outlook and provide secure access to Microsoft BackOffice, Web applications, and legacy systems. The event highlighted enterprise-class topics that include data management, systems management, security, and return on investment. Also, Microsoft's IT customers outlined how they are satisfying business needs and saving money using Windows CE-powered devices. LINK TO: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsce/itsolutions2/itnews/ ============================= INDUSTRY WATCH ============================= HITACHI TO EXPAND WINDOWS CE-BASED DEVELOPMENT TO EMBEDDED AND HOME SOLUTIONS Hitachi announced it will create a development organization focused on mobile, consumer, and real-time applications for Windows CE. Microsoft will provide this new organization with broader access to Windows CE technology, enabling Hitachi to rapidly build a wide range of customer solutions powered by Windows CE. Both companies will work on providing additional PC Companion products around Hitachi's 32-bit SuperH RISC microprocessor; developing a home multimedia station that can manipulate, integrate, store, and play digital data from various sources, including television, satellite broadcasts, the Internet, digital cameras, local storage media, and DVD; and incorporate Hitachi's expertise and Dependable Autonomous Hard Real-time Management (DARMA) technology to provide customers with additional hard real-time solutions based on Windows CE. Radiant Systems, Inc., a leading provider of integrated retail technology solutions, recently expanded its MediaClient family of products to include MediaClient-CE to offer the reliability and flexibility of Windows-based systems. MediaClient-CE, a networked Windows CE-powered system, offers an open retail platform for point of sale (POS), digital merchandising, interactive kiosks, and employee training. Radiant is currently installing MediaClient-CE solutions in selected Chick-fil-A stores. LINK TO: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/solutions/CaseStudies/Radiant.asp MATSUSHITA AND MICROSOFT SHAKE HANDS ON EXPANDED DIGITAL RELATIONSHIP As part of their expanded relationship, Microsoft Corporation and consumer electronics industry leader Matsushita Electrical Industrial Company, Ltd. signed a formal memorandum in July, agreeing to combine their efforts on digital audio, video, and PC technologies. Their collaboration will focus on such technologies as Web TV terminals and digital cable advanced set-top boxes. Plans to create a corporate licensing policy will permit Matsushita to use the Microsoft Windows CE operating system in innovative new products. The package includes a small parenthesis-balancing text editor and a grep utility. Features include file creation and manipulation, regular expression operations on character strings, and TCP/IP networking. http://www.angrygraycat.com/goetter/siodhpc.htm BSQUARE RELEASES BETA HTML EDITOR FOR HANDHELD PCs AND PALM-SIZE PCs bSQUARE released a beta version of its HTML editor program for editing and saving HTML and help files for Windows CE directly on Handheld PCs and Palm-size PCs. The application includes a built-in preview feature, HTML checker, and other handy features. A beta version is available for download until September 1. http://www.bsquare.com/development/products/HTMLEditor.htm COMPUTER ASSOCIATES ADDS WINDOWS CE SUPPORT TO UNICENTER TNG Computer Associates International announced that its industry-leading enterprise management platform, Unicenter TNG, will support Windows CE as both a manageable resource and a management station. With this new support, Unicenter TNG can automatically identify, monitor and track assets with Windows CE-based Handheld PCs, Palm-size PCs, Auto PCs, and embedded system devices across the enterprise. http://www.cai.com/press/98june/tng_wince.htm HEWLETT-PACKARD OFFERS PALMTOP ASSET MANAGER FOR H/PCs Hewlett-Packard's Palmtop Asset Manager, the first true manageability application for Handheld PCs, is a fully DMI-compliant software application that works with the HP TopTools Web-based management application. With Palmtop Asset Manager, MIS managers can retrieve accurate, real-time information from DMI-compliant devices on the network for performing asset inventory and software upgrades.
