Wellington the most wired

By MALCOLM MCDONALD

IT'S OFFICIAL, Wellington is the most wired city in the most wired country on earth. At least it was in January this year.

According to the January survey by United States-based Network Wizards, New Zealand boasts 4702 Internet-connected computers per 100,000 people - more than any other country.

And New Zealand Internet Institute director Howard Frederick told a presentation in Wellington last week that the figures for Wellington are higher than the New Zealand figures.

This makes Wellington the world's most networked city, he says. By comparison, Silicon Valley, the headquarters of highly-valued Internet stocks, numbers only 3555 hosts per 100,000 people.

After New Zealand come Sweden, Australia, Denmark, Canada Netherlands, Britain, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Italy and the United States.

Interestingly Wellington was one of the first cities to put in Internet Kiosks back in 1995 - just shows what good things they are.
