MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 1998--
NEC Computer Systems Division (NEC CSD) today announced that it
has provided Circuit City with over 500 NEC Express5800(TM) ES1200
servers for use in the electronics retailer's 514 stores nationwide.
The servers, deployed throughout the country in August, are used
in the retailer's newly-introduced built-to-order kiosks, enabling
customers to design their own computers, conduct side-by-side
comparisons between systems, and, finally, place orders and choose
delivery options. The built-to-order kiosks, powered by NEC CSD's
Express5800 servers and Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R) Terminal Server
Software, allow Circuit City to compete with computer dealers who
specialize in built-to-order systems and direct sales.
``We worked closely with Circuit City to develop an integrated
Express5800 server solution incorporating their special software
bundle requirements with our built-to-order capabilities, and were
able to deliver turnkey servers to each retail site, minimizing
installation time and reducing Circuit City's deployment costs,'' said
Luis Pacheco, vice president of product development, Server Group, NEC
CSD.
``Circuit City is using the Express5800 line to meet their
customers' demands for built-to-order systems, and this is translating
into increased computer sales for them.''
``With the built-to-order kiosks powered by NEC's Express5800
servers, we are able to differentiate ourselves from other computer
dealers in the retail space, and offer our customers the opportunity
to design a system that meets their precise requirements,'' said Dennis
Bowman, chief information officer, Circuit City.
``This was one of the earliest and largest deployments of Windows
NT Terminal servers. We have experienced high reliability with NEC's
Express5800 line out of the box. NEC did an outstanding job in
delivering turnkey servers to all 514 stores.''
Circuit City's Built-To-Order Solution
In order to compete with computer manufacturers who offer
built-to-order systems direct by phone and online, Circuit City
designed its built-to-order kiosks to allow customers to design their
own systems according to their specific requirements. Customers may
choose from over one million combinations of desktop options.
The kiosks operate on NEC Express5800 ES1200 servers, which are
Windows NT Terminal servers monitored by the NEC ESMPRO(TM) Management
Suite. Since introducing the kiosks in stores in June and expanding
the service to all 514 stores nationwide in August, Circuit City has
seen a significant increase in its desktop computer sales.

the expandability and performance offered by the NEC CSD line of

II processors to deliver the optimized performance and expandability
required by workgroup applications. All NEC Express5800 servers
include the ESMPRO Server Management Suite for management of servers
and desktops. NEC Express5800 servers are available from NEC CSD
