BORDERS TO OPEN IN VICTOR (PR Newswire; 03/17/99) ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Borders(R) Books and Music announced today it will open a new 23,000-square-foot store in Victor at the intersection of Rte. 96 and Turk Hill Rd. The store will be the second Borders to enter the Rochester market and is scheduled to open this summer. Borders Group, Inc. plans to open 45-50 superstores in the U.S. as well as five new international locations during 1999. The new Borders will feature a vast selection of about 200,000 book, music, periodical and video titles. Just 50 percent of the Borders title base is common to all stores. The other half is customized to each location by knowledgeable buyers and Borders sophisticated computerized inventory system. Selection is custom-tailored to reflect regional and local interests, demographics and customer profiles. "Our incredible depth of selection gives our customers the opportunity to explore the work of authors such as Milan Kundera and Lorraine Johnson- Coleman, along with the music of Duke Ellington and Will Ackerman," said Marilyn Slankard, vice president of marketing. "There is nothing quite like the ambiance of a Borders store. It brings a stimulating atmosphere to the community, as well as a relaxing, comfortable place for book and music lovers to indulge themselves." Cafe Espresso(SM) is also an integral part of the pleasing Borders environment. In each new Borders store, customers will have the chance to relax in the cafe and choose from a variety of exotic coffees, teas and beverages from around the world, not to mention the menu of gourmet desserts and light lunch items. Borders not only provides the ultimate experience for book, music and coffee lovers, but the retailer also fosters a deep commitment to its communities. In fact, each store hosts over 30 complimentary, community events monthly including lectures, author signings, children's activities, neighborhood workshops and "Benefit Days" to support local charities. Last year, Borders hosted over 90,000 in-store events, featuring national authors, musicians and celebrities, as well as local talents in each community. Borders helped many charities raise funds for theirs causes through "Benefit Days" promotions in individual stores. All local store activities are organized by Borders' community relations coordinator, who is responsible for planning events that appeal to the unique personality and interests of the community. On the national level, Borders is dedicated to community and education support through unique relationships with some of the country's leading organizations. Borders is a major underwriter of National Public Radio(R) (NPR(R)). Through an innovative agreement -- the first of its kind for NPR(R) -- Borders features NPR Town Square(SM) kiosks in most stores. These unique displays showcase books featured on NPR, provide a listening opportunity for CDs heard on NPR programming and give customers local and national NPR program information. Borders' alliance with NPR(R) has also been the springboard for fund-raising events as well as author and artist appearances in Borders stores across the country. Borders is a sponsor of WritersCorps' Youth Poetry Slam League, a national program dedicated to helping at-risk kids succeed through the power of writing. WritersCorps works with youth, encouraging them to articulate their thoughts and feelings in the form of poetry during competitive performance poetry slams, some of which are hosted by Borders stores. In addition, Borders supports The National Book Foundation, The Academy of American Poets, Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz, and the American Film Institute, among other national arts organizations and programs.
