Thursday April 15, 11:53 am Eastern Time Company Press Release SOURCE: E-Data, Inc. E-Data Commences Appeal in Internet Patent Case GREENWICH, Conn., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- E-Data, Inc., (OTC Bulletin Board: EDTA - news) announced today that it is proceeding with an appeal of a District Court ruling to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. In May of 1998, District Court Judge Barbara Jones rendered a ruling which interpreted the claims of E-Data's Freeny Patent. Under Judge Jones' narrow interpretation, a system which downloads information onto a material object at a kiosk or retail store, for example, would infringe the claims of the Freeny Patent. E-Data strongly believes that the District Court erred in interpreting the claims so narrowly. E-Data's patent counsel, Graham & James, is in the process of preparing the appeal. In order to expedite the appeal, E-Data agreed to a dismissal of the District Court case. E-Data intends to pursue licenses with parties who infringe the claims of the Freeny Patent under the District Court's interpretation. E-Data owns related patents in Europe and Canada which survive for a longer period than the United States patent. E-Data will be exploring opportunities to exploit these patents, as well.
