VODAFONE: Vodafone Corporate introduces Mobile EPoS terminals for
remote payments
JUL 2, 1999, M2 Communications - Vodafone Corporate has become the
first UK service provider to offer Mobile Electronic Point of Sale
(EPoS) terminals to its customers. The hand-held devices will enable
businesses to maximise business opportunities by processing electronic
transactions at the point of sale, wherever the customer is, ensuring
that business is not lost as a result of being unable to accept credit,
debit or electronic cash cards.
Some examples of business functions that would benefit from mobile
EPoS technology include:

* Home delivery - eg. pizzas, home catalogue shopping * Courier
services * Exhibitions and sporting events * Police - on the spot
parking/speeding fines * Transport companies - windscreen repairers,
vehicle recovery, ticket inspectors * Field salesman
Mobile EPoS terminals offer the same functionality and operation as
standard PoS terminals, adhering to UK banking standards and
regulations and integrating with existing payment networks. However
connection to the bank is via Vodafone's GSM network, which enables a
payment to be verified, authorised and processed remotely. A fast,
reliable and resilient gateway between Vodafone and the Banks' clearing
systems provide fast transaction times, occurring within an impressive
13-15 seconds.
The terminals provide companies with the potential to increase
customer service, as well as protection against fraud and reducing
transaction costs. Compact and lightweight, they include an in-built
printer, rechargeable battery, communications interface and card
readers. The on-screen menu, together with backlit display and keys,
makes it easy to use in any location at any time. All terminals have
internal security to ensure that all applications operate in a secure
environment.
Vodafone Corporate also provides a complete Managed Service for its
Mobile EPoS terminals, including supply and management together with
pre- and post-sales support. This Managed Service is fully endorsed by
the Banks and is the first service of its kind to be provided within
the Mobile EPoS market. Vodafone Corporate offers a choice of terminals
from key terminal manufacturers Keycorp, Thyron and Dione, together
with a range of tariffs, and all running costs are charged to the
user's itemised Vodafone bill. The Managed Service also includes:
