LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Retail Store Systems Friday announced that they have been selected by The Bombay Company to provide the IBM Store System platform for their 436 stores in the United States and Canada.

The project is well underway with all of the equipment delivered and the installation part of the rollout more than half complete.

The Bombay Company, with headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, is an upscale mall-based furniture retailer with locations throughout the United States and Canada. Prior to selecting the IBM Store Systems as their final solution and Retail Store Systems as their partner, The Bombay Company considered other PC-based solutions.

The other solutions considered could not provide the reliability, consistency and resources required to implement the mission critical solution in the time frame available.

The point-of-sale rollout is a critical project for The Bombay Company due to the time pressures of the Year 2000. Retail Store Systems worked closely with IBM to provide The Bombay Company a complete solution in a very rapid time frame.

The Bombay Company store systems project consists of two phases. The first phase in 1999 will be to make the hardware in the stores Year 2000 compliant by upgrading the existing hardware to the new IBM Store System solution. The second phase in 2000 will be to move from Bombay's current custom-developed DOS-based POS Software to the JDA Windows-based POS Software.

The Bombay Company found that the IBM Store Systems solution provided an ideal platform for their existing DOS-based application as well as the recommended platform for their strategic software solution from JDA. Retail Store Systems was able to provide a complete IBM solution consisting of IBM PCs and IBM POS devices.

The IBM Store System solution provides the best of both worlds: A flexible PC-based solution with the quality and reliability of IBM hardware and services.
