Siemens Computer Systems launches the SCENIC 600 and SCENIC 800 high-performance PCs Technology innovation sets new standards for corporate PC security, performance, cost of ownership and ease of use Siemens Computer Systems, Europe's leading computer company, has launched the SCENIC 600 and SCENIC 800 - two new high performance PC systems that set new standards for the corporate marketplace with innovative new technology, exceptional security, communications, ease of use and cost of ownership. Both systems are designed for use in large corporate networks and by professional users, and include a number of essential features for the corporate user, many of which are unique to Siemens. These include the revolutionary PISA (PCI/ISA Shared Angle) slot, a new motherboard which introduces 'save to onboard RAM' features, and a new design for internal cooling without additional processor fans, which also reduces noise emissions. SCENIC 600 and SCENIC 800 PCs are priced from 699 ex VAT. Each system has been designed to meet the key requirements of the high-end corporate PC marketplace: Security: SCENIC 600 and SCENIC 800 PCs address security on a number of fronts. Mechanical security is ensured with the ability to physically lock out disk drives with a sliding cover on the front panel as well as a lockable case. Fittings are also available to securely chain SCENIC systems to seal the case and fix them to a desk or other fitting. At the same time, digital security is ensured through a comprehensive range of Siemens password functions at system level, setup level, interface level, on bootup and through write protection for disk drives. Beyond this, Siemens SICRYPT smartcard security solution offers advanced fail-safe security through a card slot integrated into the front panel of the chassis, and support for data encryption and access authorisation. The SCENIC 600 and SCENIC 800 PCs also include virus protection software. Manageability: A key requirement for large corporate networks, SCENIC 600 and SCENIC 800 PCs are available with DeskView, a modular desktop management tool that informs network administrators of the status of all PCs on the network; provides virus protection for the network; automatic fax and data transmission overnight; restarts systems in case of failure; and enables adminstrators to see and modify, from a central workstation, all data on each PC and its BIOS in the network. Most importantly, DeskView enables an administrator to automatically update a PC across the network. DeskView is based on industry standard protocols such as DMI2.0 and SNMP. Reliability is another key network management issue. Effective thermal management plays an important role in keeping PC downtime to a minimum. In the SCENIC 600 and 800 PCs Siemens has developed a new multi-level thermal management system based on a new Siemens microcontroller and a single internal cooling fan. This fan regulates processor and power supply temperature using a special hood to direct airflow as required; while optional insulation on the hard disk and optional insulating mat for the front panel, in addition to the low fan noise, make the SCENIC 600 and 800 almost silent. Ease of use: User-friendliness is essential to maximise productivity from a corporate PC. The SCENIC 600 and SCENIC 800 offer customisable hotkeys which are set up through an intuitive drag and drop function, allowing users to execute the majority of commands through keyboard hotkeys, avoiding the need to search through menus and options. In addition, full USB and Plug & Play support means that peripherals can be connected whenever necessary, even while the PC is in use. Commmunications: Because Siemens Computer Systems is part of the Siemens Information and Communication Products Group, the company is well positioned to offer a broad range of integrated IT and communications solutions. Available for the SCENIC 600 and SCENIC 800 are: I-View, an ISDN expansion card which integrates the PC with a full range of communications services onscreen, from telephone and fax to data transfer and videoconferencing in accordance with global standards I-Talk, an enhanced telephony solution which allows you to make a voice call while simultaneously transferring a file, jointly processing a document with a caller or surfing the Internet I-Surf, an ISDN data transfer solution for application sharing, fax, answering machine and Internet functionality InternetVideo Camera, a video camera for stills and moving pictures, which is also capable of Internet-based telephony Hicom Integrated, which allows you to integrate a complete ISDN PBX in a SCENIC PC. Other features The SCENIC 600 is a space-saving desktop design while the SCENIC 800 features a compact minitower chassis. Both systems are assembled on a modular basis, which makes it easier for companies to maintain and upgrade their systems: with plug-in boards and disks, all major components can be swapped in a matter of seconds. Siemens' modular approach also makes it easy for customers to choose the exact configuration that meets their needs: Chassis, motherboard & RAM The SCENIC 600 features a compact desktop chassis which nonetheless is able to accommodate oversized ISA and PCI expansion cards thanks to the PISA slot on Siemens' custom-designed Micro-ATX motherboard. SCENIC 600 systems are also available with a Siemens ATX motherboard. The SCENIC 800 minitower, based on the ATX motherboard, offers exceptional expansion potential with six drive bays and seven full-length expansion slots. Each system is available with up to 768MB RAM with or without Error Correction Code (ECC). Intel Processors The SCENIC 600 and SCENIC 800 systems are available with Intel Celeron and Pentium II processors. They will also support Intel's forthcoming Pentium III processor. Operating system & software Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 Workstation are preinstalled as standard, and Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition is optionally available. Graphics system Options on each model include the 4MB Matrox G100, 8MB Matrox G100 Productiva or the Matrox Millennium G200 for outstanding 3D performance. Storage system Both the SCENIC 600 and SCENIC 800 are available with 4.3GB, 8.4GB or 12.9GB IDE, or 4GB or 9GB Ultra-Wide SCSI hard disks. All models have options for SuperDisk, Zip, CD-ROM, CD-RW (re-writable) and DVD-ROM drives.
