Press Release
Siemens: First Provider with Full Support for Linux Targeting a Top Three position in European Linux market by end of 1999 Siemens Computer Systems is aggressively expanding its business strategy for Linux, and is now offering customers the Open Source Operating System directly as a component part of the Siemens product range. Siemens Computer Systems' Competence Centres will support users by providing Professional Services expertise and maintenance and training support for integrating Linux in their IT solutions. Support and security are important prerequisites when using Linux, particularly for commercial users. When buying a Siemens Computer Systems computer, customers can also sign a service contract for Linux and a simple call to the Siemens IT support operation is all that is needed when service or support is required. In certifying servers and clients, Siemens works very closely with SuSE, the leading European systems house for Linux. SuSE also offers its own Linux support for Siemens Celsius workstations and Primergy servers, and announced this cooperation with Siemens at CeBIT 99. Siemens will continue to increase its commitment on the Linux front. One major step in this direction was the announcement at CeBIT 99 that SAP R/3 will be offered and supported under Linux on Siemens' Primergy servers. Siemens is also working closely with leading software partners such as Oracle, Informix and Sybase to ensure that their applications will be "Ready for Linux" operation on Primergy Servers and Celsius Workstations. Siemens Computer Systems is the leading European supplier of information technology, and forms part of the Siemens Information and Communication Products Group. The company offers the industry's broadest range of computer systems from a single supplier, ranging from home computers and Net PCs through to notebooks, desktops, workstations, high-end servers and mainframe systems. In addition to its comprehensive range of hardware products, Siemens Computer Systems is focused on delivering platforms for solutions in key business areas including e-commerce, data warehousing and SAP R/3. The Siemens Information and Communication Products Group is a significant part of the DM50 billion turnover Siemens Information and Communications business segment. This new business was formed on the 1st October 1998 in response to the growing requirement for converged IT and communications products, solutions and services.
