SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Leading Fitness Health Center Gets "Leaner" Through Nationwide Adoption Of Thin Clients; Organization To Highlight Benefits Of Thin-Client Computing At iForum '99

Wyse(R) Technology, the worldwide brand leader in thin-client technology, today announced that 24 Hour Fitness has chosen Wyse Winterm(TM) Windows(R)-based terminals as its desktop standard for server-based computing at fitness club locations. 24 Hour Fitness, the world's largest privately-held fitness chain, estimates it will install more than 2,500 Winterm thin clients in up to 300 locations nationwide by the end of this year. The units will deliver new centrally managed applications used to enroll and renew club memberships, and will eventually deliver the company's new Java-based point-of-sale (POS) application.

Geoffrey Singer, Director of I.T. Strategic Planning for 24 Hour Fitness, will join Wyse Technology's Vice President of Marketing Jeff McNaught at iFORUM '99 this week to educate attendees on the benefits of thin-client computing through the organization's own experiences. The session track, entitled "You Can Never Be Too Rich Or Too Thin: The Truth About The Thin Client Desktop," will take place at iFORUM in Orlando, Florida on Thursday, September 9 from 3:45 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

"The real-world benefits from using Wyse's Windows(R)-based terminals are why we chose to standardize on thin-client technology at club locations nationwide," said Singer. "Wyse's solutions allow us to deploy a variety of browser and Windows-based applications to hundreds of geographically dispersed locations. Best of all, technical support for each club location will be minimized due to the benefits of thin-client technology and the remote maintenance utilities provided by Wyse."

24 HOUR FITNESS EMBRACES THIN-CLIENT TECHNOLOGY

24 Hour Fitness is using Wyse's Winterm 3350SE Windows-based terminals for a variety of purposes, such as sales transactions and membership renewal, and the local VT-100 emulation enables the stores to connect seamlessly to 24 Hour Fitness' legacy club application to ensure a seamless and smooth transition. As 24 Hour Fitness moves into the final roll out stages of the company's new Java-based POS application, they are testing the feasibility of delivering this application through Wyse's Winterm 5355SE network terminal featuring a local browser.

"The market opportunity for thin clients has grown exponentially and 24 Hour Fitness is yet another example of how thin-client technology is being applied in unique business environments," said McNaught. "Added values such as minimized support and remote maintenance are key reasons why companies like 24 Hour Fitness are moving to thin-client environments with products like our Winterm line. We are pleased to see 24 Hour Fitness implementing Wyse thin clients on a company-wide basis."

The Winterm 3350SE is an easy to deploy Y2K-compliant Windows-based terminal featuring multimedia performance and a wide array of connectivity options. The Winterm 5355SE is Wyse's browser-based network terminal featuring 15 embedded terminal emulations. Both systems are designed to help organizations reduce their total cost of ownership, centrally manage desktop devices and facilitate rapid device and application deployment.
